Uncle Charlie who was a natural game shot. However, Uncle Pen was so focused and meticulous about
everything he turned his mind to, that in due course he became an excellent game shot, and took on the
running of the Pipewell Shoot after grandfather Lloyd died.
His joint-mastership of the Fernie Hunt with Derek Hignett for many years was a golden era for the
Fernie. My father, Billy, for whom fox hunting was his passion until he left the shires, and moved to
Kent in 1955, often hunted with the Fernie when the meets were on the Stoke Albany side of their
country. During the war when one had to hack one's horse to and from the Meet for a day's hunting,
one thought nothing of hacking for 15 miles each way!
Later in life Uncle Pen became a County Councillor, eventually ending up as the leader of Leicestershire
County Council. There was a huge turnout in Leicester Cathedral for his memorial service as a
thanksgiving for the most distinguished of the Lloyd uncles.
