The boys were taught by their mother until she became ill in 1840, and then tutored by governesses when not in
school. Much of their time was spent outdoors observing nature in and around Stratford. William9s mother
Celina felt it was very important for her boys to read and recite poetry as this exercised the mind and memory. In
1841 the boys attended the free school in Stratford for a few weeks, but from June to the end of September they
stayed in Scarborough without their parents, where they spent much time at the Scarborough Museum.
