Uncle Charles and Aunt Sarah at Avonbank, while Arthur, Mary and Vera stayed with grandparents Edward and
Celina. The journey began across Italy where they boarded a steamer in Venice for Alexandria, staying five
months in Egypt, sailing up the Nile in a dahabeah to the First Cataract, and returning to England in May 1874
by the long sea-route through the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. William enjoyed the warm weather,
along with the art and history of ancient Egypt. He wrote notes about the climate and sketched birds and animals
that they saw on their journey.
